The ‘G Pod’ : 23/07/2020

2020…the year that completely redefined how we do just about everything! It’s been tough, we have all faced challenges that have tested our patience, our pockets, our health and our sanity.

Working from home became the norm and throw into the mix children that need to be home schooled and life as we knew it had been obliterated.

But out of all the negatives we must look to the positives. Cherish time spent with family and learn to love your surroundings. Finding a space in our homes to work, study and play is challenging and having a door to close during a business Zoom whilst the kids have music practice is now seen as a luxury!

Several years ago when the world was a different place we were working from home which is where the idea for the Garage Pod (aka G Pod) came about. At the time our garage was used mainly for storage and we considered the potential for an office space. We were renting so a full scale renovation was not an option. However after Graeme had built the cubby house as a temporary play solution for our kids, he came up with the idea of doing something similar in the garage.

An advantage of building an internal space is no requirement for weather proofing, however maximizing light into the structure was a must. Fortunately our garage had doors at both ends so during the day these could be opened to allow light and fresh air to flow through. Lovely leafy vistas into the front and back gardens were an added benefit. As with the cubby, the G Pod was built in sections that could be easily taken down and ‘flat packed’.

Similar materials were used (timber, ply, perspex for windows) and left over carpet tile samples were used on the floor. For a while it became the perfect home office, separated from the comings and goings of a busy household….but still an easy commute.

We moved on, left that house, moved the business back into an office in Camberwell. The ‘G Pod’ was taken down and has now found another home in another garage.
